One of the most common things I have noticed about the transition from not believing in the power of meditation and holistic medicine is that most people refuse to “believe it until they see it.” A lot of people feel that they don’t have it in them, or they decide before trying it that it is not for them. I used to be one of those people, but looking back now, a part of me wishes I would have just taken the leap sooner.

So for those you who are having trouble taking this first leap, here are some of my personal tips to make this seem like more of a hop and a skip than a plummeting jump from the plane to the ground with no parachute.

You already have all of the tools you need to do this.

Meditating, believe it or not, is something that we do a lot and don’t notice. Sometimes, meditating is just taking a walk outside. Or it could be just listening to music in the car. Meditating can really be anything where you find yourself happy and focused in the present moment. This is something that we already aim to achieve, and we have pre convinced ourselves that we can only achieve in certain ways. Think about the moments in which you feel relaxed and present in the moment. When beginning meditation, you can conjure up these feelings to help bring you to a sense of relaxation.

You don’t get instant results from this process.

After your first meditation, all of your problems will not disappear. Even after your 100th time all of your problems will not be gone, but this practice of meditation will help you feel more calm in the face of your problems. For those of you who like to believe it when you see it, you have to start by believing in this to see the results. If you go into a meditation session with an open mind and good intentions of wanting to try and improve whatever you are looking to improve, you will feel a lot more satisfied with your results than going into the situation expecting a miracle and a radical life changing shift within these 20 minutes. As someone who was skeptical myself, my greatest advice would be to set your expectations low, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

The final and most important thing to remember is that you control your own reality.

Life is only the experience you make of it, and while there are a lot of things that you can’t control, meditation is a great outlet to practice tightening the reins on your own life, and letting the universe know that you are in control of this horse! Meditation can be even as simple as sitting to yourself and affirming that you are going to achieve all your goals. Channeling that positive energy and feeling that empowerment is a great way to strengthen yourself and connect with the world around you.

I know that this seems a bit daunting at first, but by taking interest in this and the thought of being willing to try is already showing that you are in control of your reality and you are as ready as you can be. This leap of faith you are taking is the first step on a path to a lot of benefits, and don’t forget that you are fully equipped to be receiving them!
